Door Knocking & Canvassing

Direct voter contact at the door — targeted, tracked, and professionally managed.

What canvassing is

Canvassing is direct, in-person voter contact — typically at the voter's home. Campaigns use it to identify supporters, persuade undecided voters, gather petition signatures, and drive turnout. Unlike broadcast advertising, canvassing produces a two-way conversation and a data record for each contact attempted.

Why it still outperforms

Door-to-door contact remains one of the most durable voter contact methods available to a campaign precisely because it is personal and hard to ignore. It is also operationally demanding: turf has to be cut sensibly, canvassers have to be trained and managed, contact data has to be captured accurately, and coverage has to be verified rather than assumed.

Door Knocking & Canvassing FAQ

What is the difference between canvassing and petitioning?

Petitioning is focused on collecting valid signatures to qualify a measure or candidate for the ballot. Canvassing is broader voter contact — persuasion, voter ID, and turnout — and may or may not involve signature collection. Many campaigns run both, sometimes with the same field team.

What is GOTV canvassing?

Get Out The Vote canvassing is turnout-focused contact in the final stretch of an election, aimed at voters already identified as supporters. The goal is not persuasion but conversion of existing support into cast ballots.

Do you canvass for issues as well as candidates?

Yes. The Works runs voter engagement and public education programs on ballot initiatives as well as candidate-focused work.

How is canvassing quality controlled?

Professional programs verify coverage and contact records rather than relying on self-reported activity. The Works coordinates production targets and quality control across all active locations.
